Could Your Problem Hold the Key?

Nov 05, 2024

Ever had one of those days where everything just seems to push back?

Recently, I had one of those. My laptop crashed, I forgot my power cord, and even my bath flooded. It felt like life was saying, “Slow down.” So I did. I ended up at my cabin by the fjord, watching the fire and letting the quiet settle around me. And in that stillness, a question surfaced—one that’s guided me through so much: What is this problem designed to solve?

This question didn’t come to me overnight. Years ago, when my son Benjamin was first diagnosed with Hurler’s Syndrome, a very rare genetic disorder, my world stopped. At first, I could only ask: Why is this happening to me? It was raw, it was painful, and it felt like my entire life had shattered. But even in that grief, I knew staying in that place wouldn’t serve Benjamin or me. Slowly, I shifted to a different question: Why is this happening for me? I couldn’t change his diagnosis, but I could change how I responded to it.

Then came the obstacles—medical refusals, endless red tape, setbacks at every turn. And with each one, I leaned into a new question: What is this problem designed to solve? I began to see that every obstacle could hold an opportunity—something bigger than the challenge itself.

With this shift in perspective, solutions, resources, and perspectives I couldn’t have seen before started to appear.

Problems weren’t there to punish me; they were invitations—invitations to explore what else might be possible—for Benjamin, for me, and for the systems we were navigating.

Your Invitation

So here’s my invitation to you. Think of one problem you’re facing right now—maybe it’s big, or maybe it’s just one of those daily challenges that keeps nudging at you.

Ask yourself, What is this problem designed to solve? Don’t rush it. Just let the question sit, and see if a new perspective unfolds.

A Simple Practice

This week, give it a try:

  • Choose one challenge you’re dealing with.
  • Ask, What is this problem designed to solve?
  • Notice what comes up—maybe it’s an idea, a shift in energy, or just a bit more ease.

If anything shifts for you, I’d love to hear about it. This journey is richer when we share it.

Love,

Rita
