What if Your Problem Wasn’t Meant to be Solved?
Nov 12, 2024In my work, I’ve seen how we instinctively want to resolve problems, to get them out of the way so we can move forward. But what if that urge to “fix” sometimes prevents us from discovering a deeper answer—one that might only reveal itself when we stop to listen?
In those moments, I lean into a question that’s guided me and my clients: What is this problem designed to solve, or sometimes, to create?
It’s a small but profound shift: instead of jumping into action, we step back and listen with what I call compassionate curiosity. This isn’t about sugar-coating challenges or ignoring pain. It’s about being genuinely open to the possibility that every problem, no matter how frustrating, might be a doorway to something more.
I remember working with a client who felt utterly stuck in her leadership role. She couldn’t shake the feeling that her team wasn’t connecting with her vision, and her frustration was palpable.
Normally, she’d push harder, trying to control the outcome and fix each small problem. But this time, we paused. Instead of dissecting her team’s actions, we explored what her struggle with them was here to show her. With some curiosity, she recognized that her frustration wasn’t just about them—it was about her own need for validation, her own discomfort with letting go of control. That insight changed everything.
From a place of compassion for herself and her team, she was able to meet them where they were, and things began to shift in a way that felt natural and right.
An Invitation for You
As you think about the problems you’re facing, ask yourself: What would it look like to meet them with a softer focus, to approach them without the urgency to fix, but with a willingness to understand?
When we replace judgment with curiosity, we discover unexpected solutions—and often, these are the very keys to growth.
This shift isn’t just a tactic; it’s a choice to deepen our own capacity for clarity and insight.
Imagine the potential if, instead of resisting problems, we softened, allowing them to reveal what they’re here to teach.
How might compassionate curiosity transform the challenges you’re facing today?
I’d love to hear what comes up for you.
Love,
Rita
